Digicel Guyana Spreads

February 15th 2011 - Digicel Guyana Spreads

Digicel Guyana was involved in a number of activities in celebration of the company’s fourth anniversary on February 14. However, it was their contribution to the less fortunate that they are most proud of. On Digicel’s anniversary in Guyana which coincides with Valentine’s Day, the Digicel Guyana team surprised four very deserving families with fabulous gifts that will make their lives easier.

Single mother, Leslyn Williams, was left to fend for her seven children after her husband died. Leslyn and her children live in a tiny shack in the countryside and she does odd jobs around the community such as weeding in order to provide for her children. However, Leslyn is greatly admired by residents in her community who say that despite her challenges, she is a strong woman and an even better mother. According to residents, Leslyn walks hand in hand with her seven children everyday to and from school. The Digicel Guyana team surprised Leslyn and her children at their makeshift home and announced that the company will be partnering with the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security to provide a new home for the family. The single mother was overcome with joy and thanked Digicel for this great gift.

“Thank you Digicel! I work hard every day hoping and praying that one day I would be able to provide a better shelter for my children. I never thought that day would come. Thank you,” the very shy Leslyn said with tears in her eyes.

Fifteen year old Krishna Sohanlall and his grandmother of Patentia were also recipients of Digicel’s goodwill on anniversary day. Krishna suffers from a congenital heart defect and needs Aortic Valve replacement. This little boy’s grandmother has tried various means in order to get enough money for Krishna’s heart surgery. She was forced to borrow a lot of the money from neighbours and friends, not knowing how she was going to repay it. All she knew is that she had to do it for her grandson in order for him to live. Digicel Guyana will cover the boy’s expenses for surgery in India.

Savitri Singh who resides next to the Digicel Guyana Head Office also received assistance. Savitri’s health condition prevents her from having a regular job and she has resorted to begging on the streets in order to provide for her five children. Digicel Guyana will make life a little easier for the family by providing them with a monthly monetary contribution for one year.

The Digicel Guyana team also surprised thirty-one year old mother of five, Sandra Accra. The Ministry of Human Services and Social Security recently donated a small home to this family but they still do not have the basic amenities in the home. Tears streamed down Sandra’s cheeks as she explained to the Digicel team that life has been very tough for her.

“Many days my children and I have nothing to eat. We survive on water and bread for months. I lived in the slums before the ministry blessed me with this home. We have no stove or bed but I try my best to make my children comfortable. Digicel’s help brings hope for me and my children,” Sandra cried.

Digicel Guyana will be providing her with furniture and appliances for the home.
